When I was a student at Harvard University, I was obsessed with antiquity. As an avid student of philosophy, Ancient Greece had long piqued my interest and held my focus. So when I was offered the chance to spend several months living in Greece to study and teach philosophy, I jumped at it.

I have forgotten most of what I studied over that fateful summer, but I will never forget the moments that shaped a life-long love affair with the country I called a temporary home. From being pulled into a traditional Greek syrtos circle under the stars in one of my student’s home villages to hiking through the olive trees on the ancient road from Delphi to Kirra, the Greece I came to know was warm, inviting, and decidedly lived-in — a far cry from flying dress photoshoots and throngs of tourists.

Most travelers experience Greece through the well-worn paths of Mykonos parties and Santorini sunsets (both experiences that are undoubtedly worth having). But there is another Greece entirely, waiting for those who value privacy, heritage, and understated luxury. Nafplio — Refined Heritage by the Sea

Few towns capture classic Greek elegance like Nafplio. Once the first capital of modern Greece, it remains a masterpiece of Venetian fortresses, neoclassical mansions, and sweeping coastal promenades. I called Nafplio home for over a month of my time in Greece, and fell in love with its quiet charm, warm community, and rocky beaches.

Just beyond Nafplio, the past deepens at Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage site that once served as the kingdom of Agamemnon. Stand before the Lion Gate, enter the vaulted Treasury of Atreus, and explore the citadel walls that shaped Homeric legend. With a classical scholar as your guide at sunrise (and the possibility of private access), the ruins transform from a stop on the tourist map into a journey back to the Bronze Age.

Stay:

• Amanzoe. Yes, I am cheating here. While the unrivaled Amanzoe is located a one hour’s drive from Nafplio, it is well worth it. In true Aman fashion, this is the standard-bearer of luxury in Greece. Set on a hillside among olive groves, its private pavilions and villas feature infinity pools, a world-class spa, and access to a private beach club. Helicopter arrival is available, making Amanzoe a favorite among the most discerning (and discreet) travelers.

Delphi, Arachova, and the Gulf — Myth Meets Mountain and Sea

Delphi may be famous as the navel of the ancient world, but its setting high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus remains breathtaking even if you never step into the temple ruins. Explore the Sanctuary of Apollo and site of the storied Oracle with a private guide who brings myth to life in the cool morning air, high above the valley of olive trees that stretch to the sea.

Climb higher still, and you will find the charming mountain village of Arachova, nicknamed to some the “Mykonos of the winter.” Its cobbled lanes are lined with chic boutiques and cozy tavernas, and its stone-built houses cascade down the mountainside. Staying here pairs the sophistication of a high-altitude retreat with easy access to Delphi.

After Delphi, I recommend slipping down the coast to the small coastal town of Galaxidi. Once a naval hub, today it presents quiet, yacht-friendly harbors lined with neoclassical mansions. Evenings here are spent wandering narrow streets scented with jasmine, or dining by the water as fishing boats return with the day’s catch.

• Participate in a traditional festival. For those fortunate enough to visit during festival season, experience the music, dancing, food, and Parnassus wine of Arachova (or explore the mountain town’s boutiques and tavernas in any season).

Naxos — The Hidden Culinary Crown of the Greek Isles

Everyone has heard of Santorini and Mykonos. Far fewer have experienced Naxos, and that’s part of its allure. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, blessed with endless sandy beaches, rolling hills, and a culinary tradition that rivals anywhere in Greece. It is also far less touristy, making it the ideal island for those who want authentic Mediterranean luxury.

Here, evenings mean strolling the marble streets of Naxos Town past Venetian mansions, while days can be spent exploring secluded coves, indulging in private cooking classes with local Naxian chefs, or discovering the island’s mountainous interior dotted with olive groves and ancient ruins.

Folegandros. Often described as “what Santorini was 30 years ago,” this island has dramatic cliffs, chic boutique hotels, and a village square that comes alive with candlelit tavernas.

Milos. Known for its surreal rock formations and luminous blue waters, Milos is best explored by private boat, with exclusive access to otherwise unreachable beaches like Kleftiko.

Zagori (Epirus). Far from the islands, this mountainous region in northern Greece is a sanctuary of stone villages, arched bridges, and luxury guesthouses that are perfect for travelers who crave nature with refinement.

Hydra. A sophisticated escape just a short ferry ride from Athens, Hydra forbids cars entirely, offering winding cobblestone lanes, waterfront mansions, and secluded boutique hotels.
